Sing a New Song unto the Lord…
Music has always been an integral part of worship for the congregation of Christ the King. Many musicians, both professional and avocational, number within the ranks of our congregation. Whether in the pews or in the choir loft, we are a hearty, singing congregation. If you have a longing to play or sing, we encourage you to find the best way for you to offer your musical gifts at Christ the King.
Under the direction of Dan Young, the Christ the King choir sings weekly at the 10am Sunday Eucharist from September to early June, accompanied by our organist Dan Young. We are a community of about 12 volunteers, augmenting our numbers for Christmas and Easter seasons.
We rehearse weekly on Sunday mornings before and after the 10am service. Both vocal and musical instruction are woven into the fabric of these rehearsals, following the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) methods. While respecting and rejoicing in the riches of our Anglican choral heritage, we also enjoy singing other styles of music such as Renaissance Motets, Spirituals, Appalachian Songs and Anthems by contemporary composers. In fact, in 2010, the choir presented a world premiere: “King of Glory, King of Peace,” an anthem by American composer Roland Martin, commissioned by our congregation to commemorate its 50th anniversary. As a congregation, we regularly chant the psalms–the bible’s songbook–in our services, either in Anglican chant or plainsong. During most of the year, we sing both traditional and modern settings of the Mass congregationally.
The choir is a close-knit group within the larger community of the congregation, working to lead and inspire through the sung word. Besides singing together weekly, we enjoy social fellowship and creative renewal at our twice-yearly choir retreats and choir parties. In addition to regular weekly worship on Sunday, we also sing for special events including:
- Choral Evensong service – a uniquely Anglican service.
- Christmas Lessons & Carols service–traditionally on Advent IV.
- Christmas Eve Musical Prelude.
- Holy Week services–Maundy Thursday, Good Friday.
We also enjoy joining with other choirs, soloists, and musical ensembles for special concerts, such as Vivaldi’s Gloria. In recent years we have enjoyed the company of the Huguenot Brass Quintet & Timpani for our Easter Festival Eucharist and for our Patronal Feast of Christ the King in November. The choir has also been known to sing for weddings and funerals at the parish.
Membership in the choir is open to anyone by means of a simple interview and audition. Parish membership is not a prerequisite to participation with the choir. Interested ringers or singers are always welcome to contact the Director of Music, Dan Young at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
