ON DEATH AND DYING SEMINARS
Wednesdays, March 10th, 17th and 24th – 6:30 pm
During Lent, members of the Pastoral Care Team, along with other community professionals, will be presenting a three part series on “Death and Dying.” The purpose of this seminar is to start conversations with our families on this sensitive, and sometimes difficult, topic by providing information on various aspects of what are typically called “end-of-life” issues. By providing information, presented by lay and professional speakers, along with some excellent documentary films, you’ll have more knowledge to make informed, rational and caring choices.
These are some of the topics:
Wills and Trusts, and Last Requests: Explore the financial importance for your family, for planning ahead to protect your property and provide for your family.
Health Care Directives and Proxies: Making sure you, your family and your health care providers know your wishes about the care and treatment you’d like to receive, especially in extreme circumstance where you’re unable to communicate. In this segment we’ll also talk about the importance of naming individuals who can interact with your health care practitioner and carry out your wishes when you can no longer communicate. This covers more than just ‘pulling the plug’ decisions—it encompasses end of life care generally. (This is especially important for non-traditional families, where there is no automatic legal standing.)
Hospice Care: Information about available care and services for the terminally ill.
Funerals: Taking the mystery out of traditional funerals, and presenting some newer choices of home and green burials. This section will also provide information from both a traditional undertaker and a local Memorial Society.
The Church’s Teaching: wrapping it up ― our faith in action, the teaching of our Episcopal church, and what our Christian beliefs say about funeral practices and burial.
In today’s culture, the death process has mostly become hidden from public view, and sometimes we don’t know how to adequately respond. In years past, especially in rural settings, it was more likely that our elders would die and be buried from home – there was more direct involvement with the life cycle. Today, with advances in medical technology, it is more likely we’ll pass on in a medical facility, and our bodies whisked off to be prepared for funerals. During these stressful times, when we’re in grief, we’re vulnerable, easily directed by others who might not know our particular individual circumstances or make choices not in accord with our wishes. Our intent is to provide information and a forum to ask questions, to enable people to make rational, caring, informed decisions, armed with knowledge and advance planning.
Please join us for one or all of these 3 sessions, on Wednesday evenings, March 10th, 17th and 24th starting at 6:30 pm in the parish hall at Christ the King Episcopal Church with a simple hot soup meal.

FROM THE CHOIR LOFT
We hope you’ll plan to attend Lenten Evensong at Christ the King on Sunday, March 14th at 5 PM. Celebrating the glorious 20th century English music specifically for this service, the choir will be singing Sir William Harris’ moving Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in A, as well as Banyon’s When Rooks Fly Homeward. If you haven’t attended in the past, you might think of enriching your experience of Lent this year with this beautiful Anglican invention. A combination of the monastic hours of Vespers and Compline, this service offers us the consoling truths of the scripture, highlighted by their setting to hymns and choral music, aptly accompanying the setting sun – a lovely, contemplative experience! There will also be a silent auction that evening benefitting Christ the King’s music program and Episcopal Relief and Development, and you’ll be able to enjoy a wine and cheese reception following this event. This service acts as a fitting stepping stone to Holy Week, which this year includes a candlelit service of Tenebrae on Good Friday, and the return of the Huguenot Brass Quintet on Easter Sunday.
For those who enjoy joining our choir to sing for Holy Week, please express your interest to James Ruff. In order to sing with us, we will ask that you attend 3 of the 4 Thursday evening choir rehearsals during the month of March. To sing on Easter Sunday, you’ll also need to attend the dress rehearsal with the brass quintet on Saturday morning, April 3rd, at 10 AM.

TREASURER’S REPORT
The church has donated $1428.30 to Haiti Relief, which is from our "loose plate & loose checks" but there were checks made out directly to Diocese of NY as well so the total from our Church is $1,778.30. The playground for the new school in South Africa received donations in the amount of $3,110.00. The replacement of the Rectory roof and the work to repair the damage from ice on the Church has been completed. We have approximately 521.4 gallons of fuel left on the 2600 gallons that we put a "capped price" on which was $2.599 per gal. Your pledge payments are coming in so we can meet our expenses. Thanks for all your generous support
