Ulster Immigrant Defense Network

Christ the King is part of the Ulster Immigrant Defense Network, which offers assistance to immigrants in crisis.  CTK is collecting gently worn or new seasonally appropriate clothing for women and children.  These are distributed in a monthly food and clothing giveaway at Holy Cross Episcopal Church.  CTK is also looking for more volunteers to help support the network.

What follows is a letter from a volunteer, Stephanie Krystal, who organized a fundraising effort to support UIDN.

I am raising money for Ulster Immigrant Defense Network in Ulster County, NY.

UIDN was formed in 2017 by concerned residents and faith based organizations in response to the immigration crisis – children separated from their parents; children and parents in detention centers; people turned away at ports of entry after arduous journeys to flee violence and seek a better life; people dying in the desert, at the border and in detention centers.

This grassroots non-profit focuses on protecting and supporting our immigrant neighbors, and in assisting asylum seekers in our community with pathways to citizenship.  UIDN operates a helpline and staffs an office with bilingual translators, provides assistance in assessing legal support, helps to fund bonds, offers “know your rights” trainings, maintains a rapid response team, and distributes food and clothing.  UIDN provides transportation and accompaniment to court and ICE appointments to help prevent deportations.

UIDN has no overhead or salaried positions.  It is volunteer run.  Our largest expense right now is transportation.  Although we have many volunteers, not enough to fill the need of over 250 families and more coming each week to our area.  Last week $4,000 was paid in bonds for four people.  In the month of June, over 35 trips were made to ICE appointments at $250/300 per trip.  UIDN depends on grants and fundraising to keep this much needed work going.

Your donation will allow UIDN to continue to help our friends and neighbors.  Our grant will soon be depleted, money is needed now.

I volunteer as a driver and it is heartbreaking to know the fear our friends and neighbors are experiencing – not knowing their fate or the fate of their children or partners.

You can show that they are welcome by donating today.

Thank you,

Stephanie Krystal
